Posts: 5 | First off-please forgive me if this is a repeat. I did search this site and Googled to no avail. Came across a used Weatherby Orion 20 Gauge at Cabelas in Oregon and would like to know a little information about it. Weatherby Orion 20 Gauge Chamber: 3' Barrel: 26' Vent rib Choke: M/IC S/N G000XXX Don't have much more to go on at this point. Pondering my son's admiration of its heft/balance, how well it fit etc has driven me to ask them to transfer it up here so don't have it in my.err ahhh. I mean .his. hands yet. In the mean time I would like to learn of any limitations ahead of time as it will be my sons first shotgun. Hope to learn where it was made- what year, ascertained by the S/N prefix with out going to Weatherby. Are replacement barrels available or any option for newer barrels with changeable chokes? Also question if using steel shot would be ill advised. Is there a way to determine if original barrels are installed? Hopefully this isn't 'the one model year' shunned for problems. Thank you very much for any information.

Location: New England | The only thing I know about the Orion is that, being an SKB (Japan) prettied-up & branded for Weatherby, it's hell-for-stout - and very decent quality for the $$$$.

It's very likely, IMO, that the gun was made by SKB. In fact, I don't know of any Weatherby Orions that were made by any other company.
It's probably at least 25 years old.
I would say there's about a 99% (or greater) chance that these are the original barrels. I don't know of any replacement barrels that are available.
Don't know about steel shot. Probably OK to use, but I'd rather know the age of the gun first.
You could have the gun barrels threaded to accept choke tubes. Mike Orlen is highly recommended for this job. His prices are very reasonable and his turnaround time is quick.

But so are these I guess as long as we can continue the legacy with more time on the range and in the field.
I will go ahead and contact Weatherby for details-
My son is excited and counting the minutes till we can pick it up and head to the range.
